Where is the best place to stay in Bansko?
If you’re planning a ski holiday in Bansko, one of the first questions you’ll probably ask is: where’s the best place to stay?
And the honest answer is… it depends what kind of trip you want.
Bansko isn’t a huge town but it is a town with a ski resort above it so the different areas have very different vibes. I’ve lived here and run chalets in Bansko for years, so I’ve seen first-hand what works (and what people sometimes get wrong).
This guide will help you choose the right area (and avoid a couple of common mistakes).
The Gondola Area (Best for convenience and nightlife)
If your priority is being close to the ski lift, the gondola area is the obvious choice.
You’re right next to the main lift, which means easy access to the slopes — especially helpful in peak weeks when queues can build up.
This area is also where most of the après ski and nightlife happens. Places like Tipsy 360, Amigo’s, Contrabar and Jack’s House are all here, along with some great restaurants like Casa di Papi and Alpen.
That said, it’s not the most traditional part of Bansko. It feels more like a purpose-built ski resort area, and you’re quite far from the old town and Bansko’s unique historic centre.
Good for:
- Easy lift access
- Lively atmosphere
- Short stays and party-focused trips
Worth knowing:
A lot of people stay here and never really see the “real” Bansko. If you do stay near the gondola, it’s definitely worth walking down into the old town at least once — it’s a completely different experience.

The Old Town (Best for atmosphere and culture)
The old town is what makes Bansko feel different from many other ski resorts. It's one of the things that made me fall in love with the place.
Think cobbled streets, traditional stone buildinsg and local taverns (mehanas) serving hearty Bulgarian food.
It’s full of character and at weekends it’s often busy with both visitors and locals. If you want a bit of culture alongside your skiing, this is where you’ll find it.
You can even join the Bansko free walking tour on a weekend to learn more about the history, you'll learn all sorts!
The trade-off is distance. You’re further from the gondola, so getting to the slopes takes a bit more planning.
Good for:
- Traditional atmosphere
- Food and culture
- A more “authentic” Bansko experience
Worth knowing:
You’ll likely need to rely on taxis or shuttles to get to the lift, especially in ski boots.
